Details for: Air raid, Chatham barracks


Historical Data:
On the night of Monday 3rd Septmeber, four Gotha bombers attacked the Medway towns of Gillingham and Chatha, Due to confusion form earlier practice alarms and because this was the first night raid, therre were few preacautions taken. Up to 900 men were asleep in the Drill Hall of the Barracks when two bombs exploded, one nearby and one in the Drill Hall itself. A heavy glass roof was blown upwards and cracshed down onto the sleeping men. In the carnage, up to 130 men died, many succumbing to their injuries caused by the falling glass.
