Herbert Henry Barber was born in 1910 and was one of six children. The Barber family lived on Blenheim Road, Upper Holloway, Islington. In 1936 Herbert married Florence Dorothy Burlingham and they had a daughter, Janet, in 1937.

Herbert served his country as a gunner in the Royal Artillery during World War 2 until his death on 18 October 1941, as a result of a motor cycle accident.
