Details for: Convoy PQ-8 and the sinking of H.M.S. Matabele


Historical Data:
H.M.S. Matabele was a Tribal class destroyer. In January 1942, with H.M.S. Somali, she formed the screen for the cruiser H.M.S. Trinidad on Convoy PQ-8 from Iceland to Murmansk. On 17th January 1942, H.M.S. Matabele was torpedoed by U-454 and sank almost immediately. Many were able to leave the ship before she sank but the freezing waters claimed their lives. Only two survived from a complement of 238.
