Details for: Sinking of H.M.S. Penelope


Historical Data:
H.M.S. Penelope was an Arethusa Class Light Cruiser. On 18 February 1944 she was leaving Naples ot return to Anzio when she was torpedoed by U-410. A torpedo struck her in her engine room followed, sixteen minutes later, by a second in the after boiler room. She sank immediately with the loss of 415 crew. There were 206 survivors. At the time the first torpedo struck, she was making 26 knots. No other ship running at such a speed was ever successfully attacked.
