Details for: Sinking of H.M.S. Dorsetshire


Historical Data:
H.M.S. Dorsetshire was a County class heavy cruiser. In early April 1942, with her sister ship H.M.S. Cornwall she escorted the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Hermes to Trincomalee in Ceylon for repairs. On 4th April a Japanese carrier fleet was spotted and the two cruisers left harbour. They were both heavily attacked and the Dorsetshire was sunk by ten bombs. 234 men died in the attack, more than 500 being rescued the next day from rafts.
