Details for: Sinking of HMS Avenger

Historical Data:
HMS Avenger was a British Auxiliary Aircraft carrier. On 12 November 1942 she left Algiers and formed up with convoy MKF 1(Y), which comprised ships which had taken part in the TORCH landings of North Africa. This convoy left Gibralter on the 14th but came under attack 45 nautical miles south of cape Santa Maria, Portugal. At 0320 on the 15th, Avenger was struck amidships by a torpedo fired from U-155. The explosion ripped through her bomb room, resulting in a catastrophic secondary explosion that ripped out her centre. Her centre gone, she broke her back and her bow and stern rose in the air. She sank in under five minutes with the loss of 68 officers and 446 ratings. Only 12 were rescued.
