Details for: Convoy HC-44 and the sinking of SS El Madina.


Historical Data:
HMS President III was a London based naval depot. George Spears was assigned to the SS El Madina, an Indian troop ship. On 16th March 1944 she left Calcutta in convoy HC 44, a convoy of 10 cargo and troop ships bund for Chittagong in India. That same day she was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine RO-111 and broke in two and sank. She had more than 1000 people on board, 814 of whom were rescoued by the SS Lovstad. SS El Madina lost ten crew, six gunners and 364 troops.
