Details for: Convoy WP-183 and the sinking of HM Trawler Manor


Historical Data:
HM Trawler Manor was part of convoy WP-183 which was attacked by e-boats and aircraft in the English Channel south of Portland and Weymouth on 9th July 1942. The convoy suffered particularly badly. At the end of the engagement the Manor was missing. An inquiry was held into her disappearance and the testimony of the sole survivor revealed that there had been three major explosions before the little ship sunk. A number of ratings on the deck manning the gun and acting as look-outs. Some crew were turned in below. The ship sank so quickly that no one below had the time to get to the floats and lifeboat.
