Details for: Sinking of SS Bello


Historical Data:
The S.S. Bellowas built in Sunderland in 1930. She left the Clyde on 11th December and was sailing to New York as part of convoy ON 153 when she was struck by two torpedoes fired from the submarine U-610. She sank quickly with no distress signal being sent although some life-rafts were launched. Of the crew 28 Norwegian and five British seamen died Convoy ON 153 originally set out from the Clyde with 43 ships, by the time they reached New York there were 21, many having lost contact in the dab weather, in particular the ferocious gales from the 15th to 23rd December.
