Details for: Loss of Halifax II (Reg. W7909 ZA-Z)

Taking off at 2321 from melbourne for a mission to Bochum, their Halifax II (Reg. W7909 ZA-Z) was shot down by a night fighter, flown by Lt Hans-Heinz Augenstein (III./NJG1). Their aircraft crashed at 0156 on the Gildehausen Venn between the monastery at Bardel and the town of Gildehaus. All seven crewmen were killed. One, Sgt. Lepetit, at 18 was one of the youngest of Bomber Command to be killed in 1943.
