Details for: Battle of Spion Kop


Historical Data:
During the British attempts to relieve the siege of Ladysmith in 1900, a British force encountered 7,000 Boer under Louis Botha defending Spion Kop, the highest point of the Tugela heights. Lt. Gen. Warren ordered a nigth attack by 1,700 troops under Lt. Gen. Woodgate to capture the heights. As dawn rose on the 24 January and the morrning fog lifted, the British found themselves in a position completely expsoed to enemy fire. After dark the British retreated, having lost 250 dead including Woodgate and 1000 wounded.
