Details for: Battle of Bakenlaagte

Historical Data:
The Battle of Bakenlaagte took place on 30 October 1901 during the guerilla phase of the Boer War. Combiend forces of the East Transvaal commandos attacked the rearguard of the Commonwealth No.3 Flying Column, which had been operating with great success. The column had become spread out and the  Boer saw this as a good opportunity to attack. The isolated rear giard of the column was singled out and, although outnumbered four to one, they set up a defensive position and their resistance only stopped once they had been annihilated. Combined casualties numbered 120 killed and 234 wounded. The 73 dead Commonwealth troops were initially buried on Gun Hill, where they made their stand, but were later reinterred in Primrose Cemetery, Germiston.
