The text below gives a summary of the conflict (i.e. war), event or incident that resulted in deaths in the Borough or abroad. On the right are listed the individual events and incidents, such as battles or air raids. For each conflict the total number of casualties are given, whereas for each event or incident the names of those who died are listed in alphabetical order.

Details for: V-1 attack on Saturday 29th July 1944


Historical Data:
Saturday 29th July 1944. "…at 7.30 p.m. on July 29th 1844, a flying bomb hit K Block of Moorfields Hospital, which included the male and female cubicle wards. Jordan, the night porter since 1927, telephoned the secretary, Mr. Tarrant, to say that the Block had been hit, killing 3 men and 4 women..." ("A History of Moorfields Eye Hospital", Frank Law, 1975). Seven lives were lost in Block K. Also that day, a V-1 weapon hit Peerless Buildings and Peerless Buildings Shelter in Peerless Street with the loss of 22 lives.
