Details for: Air raids on Sunday 13th October 1940


Historical Data:
Sunday 13th October 1940. About 180 aircraft made attacks on the south-east during the day, many penetrating into London causing substantial damage, especially to the Mile End and Shoreditch areas. Islington suffered damage but the only fatalities to Islingtonians occurred at Bounds Green Road tube station. At 2055 hours a bomb blew a wide crater penetrating deep into the underground railway tunnel 55ft below ground. 19 people, five from Islington, sheltering there were killed, including a number of Belgian refugees who had been living nearby. The Luftwaffe lost six aircraft this day.
