Wednesday 9th October 1940. Three attempts were made during the day by enemy aircraft formations of up to 170 aircraft to penetrate to London. In an afternoon raid, 60 aircraft bombed areas that included Finsbury, Shoreditch and West Ham. College Cross, Hornsey Road, Sheen Grove, St. Matthew's Hospital and the Leysian Mission on City Road were hit with the loss of 27 lives. 96-year-old Emma Henesy died at her home in College Cross, Park Street. She was the oldest person to die in Islington during the war. In all 77 people were killed in London, 295 injured. Elsewhere in the country, 23 were killed. Four enemy aircraft were confirmed destroyed, four probable and five damaged.
